Rezz Day thoughts

Yesterday was my 2nd Rezz day and we had a party at the Crown and Pearl.  Prad DJ’d for about 4 hours while we celebrated not only my rezz day but the rezz days of 3 of my dearest friends, Rrishanna Regina, Bailey Dazy, and Aribeth Coronet.  These ladies are truly special.  The day was wonderful filled with great friends and good music.

Thank you everyone who came by the Crown to wish us well.

I didn’t take any pictures during the party but Ahuva did so pop over to her blog and check them out.  Go ahead, I’ll wait…..  Welcome back 🙂

I need to share my rezz day present with all of you because it is just amazing.

Present from Prad

This is a miniature Crown and Pearl in globe and in turns!!  It’s absolutely beautiful and I totally adore it!!

There are times when you are simply speachless at the thought and love that goes into a gift.  This was one of those times.

Thank You Prad for the lovely party and the beautiful gift.  ❤

My second rezz day is this weekend.  Wow.  Two years ago I entered this wacky awesome world for the first time.  I remember my first month in SL like it was yesterday.  Several names stick out too.  Names of people who are my closest friends.  Several of us all started around the same time.  Bailey Dazy, Aribeth Coronet, Rrishanna Regina and myself.  We all joined within the same 10 days.  We are all still good friends.

When I think back on all the changes that have happened in those 2 years I’m amazed at what we take for granted now.  Can you say sculpti?   I remember the hype leading up to it.  The day they were brought in world everyone was making bowls of fruit!  The Three Lions was open then.  I remember HellspawneD and lots of others littering the floor with apples, the *default* sculpti.  LOL  Look how far sculptis have come and how much they are used.  There isn’t a piece of SL that isn’t touched by them.

What about voice?  Remember the days when it didn’t exist?  It’s not perfect, but it works.  🙂

The Three Lions.  Good memories there.  Ari and I found it thru a wedding we crashed. 😉  Not sure  how she found that wedding but I’m glad she did!  Ari fell right in and started working there.   I started hanging out there too.  Met some truly wonderful people.  Phill and Kai ran the place and were great.  Love them both and miss seeing them these days.  The Lions was home.  It was the first place I went to every day and likely the place I logged out from.  The parties we had were second to none.  The DJs brilliant.  Prad, Kendra and I took over the daily management of the place for awhile to let Phill and Kai focus on other stuff.   Sadly, Phill closed the Lions and sold the sim in November of last year.  We had a huge going away party that lasted a good 24 hours. 🙂  The next day, we reminisced and we cried over losing our *hangout*.  What Prad, Kendra and I realized though was that it wasn’t the *place*, it was the people.  So, we vowed to create a new *place* for those great people.  Using the same principles of the Lions, the Crown and Pearl was born.

The Crown and Pearl will be one year old next week, the 19th.  Wow, time flies.  It’s on it’s 3rd sim, and it’s last now.  We aren’t moving it again!  Well not unless Prad or I win the lottery and upgrade it to a full sim. 😛   We’ve had our ups and downs and moments when I really thought we’d just pack it in but we survived.  One year in SL is a long time for any business let alone a BAR.  I’m proud of what Prad and I have created.  And I want to thank everyone who has helped to make it what it is today.    We really couldn’t have done any of it without your love and support.

Angel Square.  About 9 months ago I bought the sim that is now Angel Square.  It’s been a blast owning it.  The residents are wonderful folks.  All terrific people who make it a pleasure to be a landlord.

Looking back I realize how much I’ve changed from those noob days.  New skins, hair, clothes etc are all window dressing.  I’m talking about me, Bailey the av and yes even the person behind the av.  We’ve definitely changed, hopefully for the better.  I’ve learned soo much in the last 2 years.  Building is a sometimes passion, sometimes chore but always something I enjoy.  I think I’ve gotten pretty darn good at it too.  I finally broke down and got photoshop(well, someone gave it to me yay!) and I’ve been snapping pics and photoshopping and flickring ever since.  I went nuts for awhile, doing 3, 4, 5 pics a day.  Now, I’m doing one or two as the mood strikes me.  I’ve got loads of ideas in my head for some great pics but until I’m *inspired* to take them they remain ideas.  I started DJing in the past couple months.  I’m no where near having a large music library, I DJ just for the fun of it.  Who knew it wouldn’t be that hard. 😉

There are so many people who have touched my life in the last 2 years.  I wouldn’t know where to start with everyone.  There are a few special people though.  Without them, SL would not be what it is for me.  I can’t finish this post without mentioning them.

Ari… My oldest and dearest friend.  Thru it all, you’ve been there for me.  Your love and support have meant the world to me.  I really could not, would not do this without you.  Thank you!

Prad… What can I possibly say that hasn’t been said far too many times.  Love, trust, loyalty and respect you’ve shown me.  You’ve taught me much, listened when I needed a ear, lent a shoulder when I needed to cry and laughed with me(oh all right, AT me :P).  You’ve been a great business partner and an even better friend.  Thank you!

Bailey Dazy(BD)… From the days when you were in your *hole* on Bourton, to the day I was honored to preside over the joining ceremony of you and MJ, to my wedding day, to today, there is no truer friend.  I love you dearly.  Thank you!

Rrishanna Regina… Your style and your grace have been an inspiration.  You’ve become one of my closest friends.  I’ve watched your talent develop and grow and you continue to amaze and inspire me.  Thank you!

I could go on and on about everyone I’ve ever met in 2 years but frankly, that would bore you all to death so I won’t.  Just know that every one of you have helped to shape me into the person I am.

Two years….

Here’s looking at another two….

A few people have posted about the Crown lately.  It seemed appropriate that I do the same.  After all, she’s my baby. 🙂

For those who may not know, The Crown and Pearl is the bar owned by Prad Prathivi and myself.  A place built out of love and friendship.  Built for good conversation, dancing, fishing and great friends.

It has no doors…. everyone is welcome.

It has no roof…. the sky is the limit on your imagination.

It has no walls…. we are open and welcoming

It is a bar but it is so much more, it’s a family.

DJ’s playing good music, good people laughing and carrying on, new residents learning the way of SL from friendly helpful people…

a family.

The Crown and Pearl is a family, a family you can choose to be a part of.  Come in sit a spell, join the conversation.  If we laugh, it’s not at you, it’s with you.  It’s a family I’m proud to be a part of.

Prad and I have tried really hard to make sure the Crown is an environment that everyone wants to be a part of.  No commercialsim, no naked newbs with frenis’, not many annoying gestures. 😉  We wanted people to want to be there.

Thank you to everyone for helping to make it what it is today.   If I try to name you all, I’ll miss someone and feel dreadful.  So I’ll just say, Thank You!

Well it seems a little bit of controversy is good for the not only the soul but the blog stats too. LOL  Last weeks discussions of freebies was certainly interesting.  Fortunately I didn’t get the hate mail/comments that Ana and Prad did.  I will never understand how viscious people can be simply because they either don’t agree, or don’t understand.  Anyway, enough about serious stuff for now.  The economics of SL won’t crumble in a day or two.

If you want to read something laugh out loud funny, then go read Prad’s blog.  His latest post is sheer genius.  I warn you though, put beverages down before reading.  I will not be responsible for you spewing (insert beverage of choice here) on your monitor or keyboard.  Nor will I be held responsible for the pain and suffering of your nose when the above occurs.  Don’t say I didn’t warn you.  😛

Lands was a busy blogger too.  Her post about the Women of Crown is really lovely.  Gave me a warm feeling inside.  These ladies are family and you mess with one of them, you take  your life in your hands.  Just sayin…  Her reflections on RL and SL are awesome too.  I’ve got a post floating around in my head about that too.

Yesterday was the 1st annual pub/bar crawl.  Sponsored by Molaskey’s and organized by Nasus Dumart.  It was a lot of fun.  I wasn’t able to go out to the other bars, I was DJing the event for the Crown but it seemed to be a success.  It was nice to meet some new people, make some new friends.  I hope everyone stops back at the Crown in the future. 🙂

I spent some time working on the gallery.  I think it’s just about ready to open.  Invites will go out in the next few days.  Each artist will have a  panel in which to display their work.  Themes will change frequently.  Each artist will need to change their art every 2 weeks or so.  Details will go out soon.  I realize there are loads of galleries out there. This is meant to be constantly changing.  A commentary on SL itself with things changing in world at such a quick pace.

The Crown moves soon.  She’s all grown up now, moving to her own island.  *sniffs*  Her father and I are so proud.  She’s grown up to be the warm, friendly and welcoming place we’d always hoped she be.  She turns one year old soon.  There will be a party.  Lots of cake. 🙂 You must come. 🙂

That’s it from me for now.

Wow.  It amazes me how quickly people can jump to personally attack someone on their own blog.  Yesterday two blogs, Ana’s and Prad’s started a discussion about freebies in SL.  Now I don’t know Ana other than what I read on her blog.  I do know Prad though.  If he takes up a serious topic on his blog, it’s because he has an opinion he wants to share.

After reading his post and Ana’s I added one of my own.  You can read it here .  After following the comments all day and then catching up on Plurk when I got home, what is amazing to me is how quick some people were to jump to attack Ana and Prad for starting a discussion about a topic that in my mind needs to be discussed.  It doesn’t mean everyone needs to agree.  In fact, it would be sad if we did all agree on everything.  I enjoy a good honest debate, but when people start making personal attacks, that’s wrong.  Is it that they have nothing to say but want to *participate*?  Or are they simply seeking attention for themselves?  I don’t know.  Maybe a bit of both.

I resisted starting a blog for a long time.  Reason… I didn’t want to subject myself to either having no one read the blog or to having the personal attacks.  It occurred to me though, I write it for myself.  If someone reads, great!  As far as personal attacks, no one has yet.  If they do, I stand behind what I write here.  If you disagree with me, tell me.  Argue your point.  Hey, you may even change my mind!

So, to get back to yesterday and the freebie discussion.  A few things occur to me.

1.  Most people like getting freebies in one way or another.  Well who doesn’t really, especially if it’s something well done and given to you by the creator for one reason or another.  I certainly don’t turn down group gifts.  Nor do I refuse gifts from my friends who are content creators.

2.  Most store owners want to increase traffic AND sales.  Well this is really a no-brainer.   Announcing a freebie will increase traffic.  Will it increase sales?  Don’t know.  I think there is a 50/50 shot here.  The theory is that the more people who come to the store, the more chance you have to make a sale.  I’d really love to see a test to see if works.  Not hard to do either.  Would take 3 weeks in total.  One week of normal operations.  One week of a freebie.  One week of no freebie but other *advertising*.

3.  Store owners/content creators don’t like the folks who walk around like they are *entitled* to something.  Well really, who does?  I agree it has gotten way out of control.  Whether it’s RL society issues or not, i’m not sure.  I have  noticed though an entire generation of young people who feel they are *owed* something.  I could write an entire blog post on this subject alone, and maybe I will.  My suggestion here, if you have people like this, mute them and ban them.  I  know someone(sorry can’t remember where I saw it) already mentioned this.  I think in the comments of Ana’s post.  You aren’t going to lose a good customer because this person won’t pay for anything in the first place.

So, those are the 3 main things I’ve seen/heard/noted from the discussions yesterday.  Instead of attacking each other, why not get together and do something to try to change what you don’t like and promote what you do?  Run some experiments/tests to see what really improves sales.  I put some suggestions on my post yesterday.

I may not have a store or be a content creator myself, but I am a consumer.  I spend my $L like a lot of people, pay tier(own a sim and 3 open spaces), and run a bar(The Crown and Pearl) so I do have some knowledge of how things work.  I’d love to see several store owners come together and try something different.  🙂

That’s my 2 cents worth.

After reading Prad’s post this morning, and then seeing all the comments something occurs to me.  The idea of freebie’s and freebie hunters increasing is actually a selfulfilling prophesy.  Before you all flip out think about it for a minute.

Back in November ’06 when I started in Sl there were a few *Freebie warehouses*.  And frankly the quality was well, questionnable then and horrible now.  I picked up some stuff but until I bought my first bunch of lindens and actually went shopping, I wore the same system skirt and shirt, changing the textures myself.  Ditto on the hair.

I’m not a big freebie shopper.  Most of the time I almost feel embarrased to take one.  If I see something in a shop that’s free and looks awesome I’ll pick it up if I’ve never been to the store before.  Usually though, my freebies come from very generous friends, lucky chairs(which I don’t seek out either) and the groups I’m in.

So here’s my theory….

Store owners are constantly looking to improve traffic, boost sales etc etc.  Think about how many clothing stores there are all competing against each other.  So, you want to increase your traffic and boost your sales.  What can you do?  Here’s some options:

1.  Have a sale.  Drop the price for a week on some items.  Do it often on different things so that no one knows what will be on sale and when.

2.  Re-release retired items.  Did you see all the people at Last Call before they closed and previously retired items were re-released?  Yeah, full sim, a lot.  You may have to tweak the quality of the older items but that shouldn’t be a show stopper.

3.  Advertise Advertise Advertise.  Got a blog? Get on all the fashion blog feeds.  I read them everyday, write down what I want to see and make the rounds later.  Don’t always buy everything but I do go and look.  Sometimes I’ll even buy something that wasn’t on the blog. 🙂

4.  Have an event at the store.  Treasure hunts, live DJs, parties whatever.  Have a contest.  All these things will get people to the store.

5.  Flickr contest.  I love flickr contests.  I don’t join all of them.  Two of the ones I joined recently I even won something. 🙂  Yay me!  Ya know what happened, I ended up going to the stores, a lot.  Give a gift cert as a gift for winning and you get repeat customers.  Not only did I use up the cards, but I spent more while I was there.

6. Lucky Chair.  Put some limited edition coolness in a lucky chair.  Leave it out for a short time.  You’ll boost traffic yes.  Not sure if you’ll get people buying other stuff though.

7.  Group freebies.  Sure, send freebies out to the store group.  Make is a subscribe -O- Matic(S -O- M0 though so people don’t use up groups.  I’ll stay in a S-O-M group.

8.  Pay for an ad on search.  How much to spend is up to you.  Spend a lot, or a little, change the amount if you are running a special event.  This is probably not the best way to go, but hey, I use search so I’m sure other people are too.

So, there are 8 suggestions for store owners that don’t include the ever popular *freebie*.  Lets face it though, not every store will succeed.  It takes hard work and dedication.  Just as it does in RL.  You get what you put into it.  Work hard, maintain your integrity and stand up for what you believe is right, you’ll be a success.  It may be a more winding slightly  uphill road but when you  reach the top, you’ll be able to look back and be proud of what you’ve accomplished.

Or, you can stick out freebie after freebie and deal with the complaints from the so-called *entitled*, boost traffic but not sell anything and get more frustrated.

One other point to make….

If you put freebies out, people will expect freebies.  Stop giving them away and people will eventually be *forced* to pay for what they want.  Those that are willing to do that will stay in SL.  Those that aren’t… well…. don’t let the door hit you in the arse on the way out.

Sometimes you just never know what’s going to happen at the Crown.  I say that in all honesty.  Whether it’s attack of the Penguins, attack of the sculpted Noob or any variation on that theme, you just never know.

Last night was no exception.  A typical Tuesday you’d think.  Bonni dj’d, then I dj’d and then Prad dj’d.  So that’s about 7  hours straight of live(well live as in not radio) music.  We had a good crowd going all night.  Some new faces and old ones.  Everyone is welcome at the Crown.  Whether it’s a new resident or an old timer, all are welcome.  You’ll even find a Linden hanging around every now and then. 😉

So last night with the usual nutty suspects  around you never know what will happen.  And so, the *Haven’t slept with Prad* club was born.  I honestly don’t know how it happened.  All I remember clearly is Lands daring Prad to dare her to do it, and him doing it.  And so, it was born.  She’s got a post all about it on her blog here .  Now we all pick on Prad unmercifully.  He always takes it fairly well usually jumping in himself.  I think my favorite quote of the night was *who is prad?* made by one of the patrons last night.  She or he was not a regular of the bar and wasn’t familiar with who was who.

There were other bouts of insanity last night as always.  Far too many to comment on and you really had to be there. 🙂  So please, stop by the Crown and Pearl some night.  You’ll be glad you did!
