Appearances…

They do matter.  Lets all be honest here, appearances matter.  Men and women alike are drawn to whatever we define as attractive.  That definition of attractive is different to all of us.  What is true of everyone though is that in that first instance of seeing a new avatar we form an opinion.  Right or wrong, we do it.  Some keep an open mind until they get to know that new avatar, others have decided in that blink of an eye whether or not that new avatar will get the time of day.

Lets think about this for a minute.  You see an avatar on your screen, they don’t speak, don’t move.  They are just standing there and you are forming an opinion of them.  Don’t say you don’t, we all do.  What we do with that opinion is what’s important.

Ahuva commented on her blog yesterday about someone *suggesting* she needed an AO.  Why does she?  If she’s quite happy with how she walks or stands or sits far be it from me to tell her she *has* to have one.  If she wants one I’ll point her in a few directions but that’s her choice.  I had to have one, I hated watching myself walk around like I had a stick up my butt or that goofy hand on the hip stand.  So, I bought one and  used it for a good 2 years.  I just bought a new one and I love it for it’s convenience.  Ever try to sit somewhere and not be able to???  This AO fixes that. So YaY!

Ok, so what do you do with that opinion you’ve got?  If it looks like a new resident you’ll have one opinion.  Keep in mind though, that *new resident* could be someone that’s been in world for 2 + years and is just creating an alt.  Can’t judge a book by it’s cover. 😉

While I can appreciate a well put together avatar, it’s what that person has to say that really matters to me.  Intelligent, funny, passionate(about something other than sex 😛 ), friendly, compassionate, tolerant.  These are all things that matter to me.  Make yourself an elf, a neko, a furry, robot, whatever.  If you have the above in your personality, chances are I’m going to like you.

Our appearance is as important as you make it be.  That noob you just met could be the most fascinating person to talk to you.  If you don’t take the chance to talk to them though, how will you ever know.  They could also be a jerk so you have to take the good with the bad. 😉

In SL, our avatars appearance reflects how we want to be seen.  It’s not *who* we are.  Next time, don’t discount someone just because of how they look, what they are wearing, whether or not they have AO etc.  Take a minute and talk to them.  You might be very glad you did.

Two years…

My second rezz day is this weekend.  Wow.  Two years ago I entered this wacky awesome world for the first time.  I remember my first month in SL like it was yesterday.  Several names stick out too.  Names of people who are my closest friends.  Several of us all started around the same time.  Bailey Dazy, Aribeth Coronet, Rrishanna Regina and myself.  We all joined within the same 10 days.  We are all still good friends.

When I think back on all the changes that have happened in those 2 years I’m amazed at what we take for granted now.  Can you say sculpti?   I remember the hype leading up to it.  The day they were brought in world everyone was making bowls of fruit!  The Three Lions was open then.  I remember HellspawneD and lots of others littering the floor with apples, the *default* sculpti.  LOL  Look how far sculptis have come and how much they are used.  There isn’t a piece of SL that isn’t touched by them.

What about voice?  Remember the days when it didn’t exist?  It’s not perfect, but it works.  🙂

The Three Lions.  Good memories there.  Ari and I found it thru a wedding we crashed. 😉  Not sure  how she found that wedding but I’m glad she did!  Ari fell right in and started working there.   I started hanging out there too.  Met some truly wonderful people.  Phill and Kai ran the place and were great.  Love them both and miss seeing them these days.  The Lions was home.  It was the first place I went to every day and likely the place I logged out from.  The parties we had were second to none.  The DJs brilliant.  Prad, Kendra and I took over the daily management of the place for awhile to let Phill and Kai focus on other stuff.   Sadly, Phill closed the Lions and sold the sim in November of last year.  We had a huge going away party that lasted a good 24 hours. 🙂  The next day, we reminisced and we cried over losing our *hangout*.  What Prad, Kendra and I realized though was that it wasn’t the *place*, it was the people.  So, we vowed to create a new *place* for those great people.  Using the same principles of the Lions, the Crown and Pearl was born.

The Crown and Pearl will be one year old next week, the 19th.  Wow, time flies.  It’s on it’s 3rd sim, and it’s last now.  We aren’t moving it again!  Well not unless Prad or I win the lottery and upgrade it to a full sim. 😛   We’ve had our ups and downs and moments when I really thought we’d just pack it in but we survived.  One year in SL is a long time for any business let alone a BAR.  I’m proud of what Prad and I have created.  And I want to thank everyone who has helped to make it what it is today.    We really couldn’t have done any of it without your love and support.

Angel Square.  About 9 months ago I bought the sim that is now Angel Square.  It’s been a blast owning it.  The residents are wonderful folks.  All terrific people who make it a pleasure to be a landlord.

Looking back I realize how much I’ve changed from those noob days.  New skins, hair, clothes etc are all window dressing.  I’m talking about me, Bailey the av and yes even the person behind the av.  We’ve definitely changed, hopefully for the better.  I’ve learned soo much in the last 2 years.  Building is a sometimes passion, sometimes chore but always something I enjoy.  I think I’ve gotten pretty darn good at it too.  I finally broke down and got photoshop(well, someone gave it to me yay!) and I’ve been snapping pics and photoshopping and flickring ever since.  I went nuts for awhile, doing 3, 4, 5 pics a day.  Now, I’m doing one or two as the mood strikes me.  I’ve got loads of ideas in my head for some great pics but until I’m *inspired* to take them they remain ideas.  I started DJing in the past couple months.  I’m no where near having a large music library, I DJ just for the fun of it.  Who knew it wouldn’t be that hard. 😉

There are so many people who have touched my life in the last 2 years.  I wouldn’t know where to start with everyone.  There are a few special people though.  Without them, SL would not be what it is for me.  I can’t finish this post without mentioning them.

Ari… My oldest and dearest friend.  Thru it all, you’ve been there for me.  Your love and support have meant the world to me.  I really could not, would not do this without you.  Thank you!

Prad… What can I possibly say that hasn’t been said far too many times.  Love, trust, loyalty and respect you’ve shown me.  You’ve taught me much, listened when I needed a ear, lent a shoulder when I needed to cry and laughed with me(oh all right, AT me :P).  You’ve been a great business partner and an even better friend.  Thank you!

Bailey Dazy(BD)… From the days when you were in your *hole* on Bourton, to the day I was honored to preside over the joining ceremony of you and MJ, to my wedding day, to today, there is no truer friend.  I love you dearly.  Thank you!

Rrishanna Regina… Your style and your grace have been an inspiration.  You’ve become one of my closest friends.  I’ve watched your talent develop and grow and you continue to amaze and inspire me.  Thank you!

I could go on and on about everyone I’ve ever met in 2 years but frankly, that would bore you all to death so I won’t.  Just know that every one of you have helped to shape me into the person I am.

Two years….

Here’s looking at another two….

It’s been a heck of a week!

The election here in the US on Tuesday…  I can honestly say it’s the first time in I can’t even remember how long that I’m actually excited to see how the next 4 years will play out.  I’m quite proud of this country this week.

We sat around the Crown talking about the election Tuesday and discussing the returns.  This may not sound unusual to some people, sitting around a bar talking election results.  Consider for a moment though, a good  portion of the crowd sitting there were brits.  They didn’t vote and yet were interested enough in the election to stay up well past 2-3am to see the results.  I could go into any number of reasons why they were so interested… let’s just leave it at YAY. 😉

Guy Fawkes was Wednesday… In true Crown and Pearl fashion the sky was lit up.  There are a bunch of pics up on peoples flickr streams.  I took about 100 myself and will post a few when I get some time.  Thank you Prad for the fireworks.  It was a good time for everyone. 🙂

I’m tired just thinking about it all.  Good thing it’s Friday and the weekend right around the corner!

Per the request of my lovely friend Ahuva , this is the second in the series of land ownership – island/estates.

Ok, so you want to own land but you aren’t a premium member and you’ve heard the horror stories about mainland and want to avoid it.  You start looking to the islands/estates.

First, a little bit of terminology.  An island is also referred to as a region or sim.  All are valid descriptions.  Each island is it’s own region and each region is a sim.  For purposes of this post, we’ll use island.  Now, estate refers to the group of islands owned by own person.  In my case, Angel Square Estate incorporates Angel Square(the island), BaileysReach(an island) and Crown and Pearl(an island).  There are much larger estates than mine and I’m sure some smaller.  So, you have the estate, then the islands within the estate.  With me so far?  Ok moving along. 🙂

Estate owners can(and most do) have a covenant that lists the *rules* for living on their islands.  The theme(snow, tropical, commercial, residential etc), the types of builds allowed, how payments are made, how much tier is per month, who to contact if there is a  problem and various other items that are important to them.  It’s important to read this. For instance, most covenants say that there are no refunds on tier and that if you don’t pay on time or notify the owner your land can be reclaimed.  So, read the covenant.  All of it.

Estate land can be rented or purchased.  Again, depends on the owner.  Some perfer to rent some to sell.  In either case you will pay them a monthly tier.  Check the covenant for how you pay whether it’s paypal or lindens or some other method.  So, your paying the owner a fee to use the land.  Think of it as a mortgage payment or rental payment.

Ok so you want to buy the land.  What do you get for this?  In most cases you get full rights to do whatever you want, within the boundaries of the covenant.  This means building, terraforming, most security measures etc.  Stay within the covenant and your all set.  Your name will be listed as the owner of the land and you are free to sell it should you wish to move.  Now if you rent the land, you will not get all of those rights in most cases.  Some owners will give them, most don’t.  I do.

Now you’ve bought or rented the land, moved in, been paying tier for a couple of months and you start to get a bad feeling.  I will say this now, there are unethical estate owners and ethical ones.  Just as in RL.  Yes, the estate owner can kick everyone off the island, return your stuff and not say a word, no warning, nothing.  Chances are, they don’t have to refund any tier either.  Stinks huh.  Yep, it does.  That’s why I always suggest getting recommendations from friends about going to an estate.

The estate owner can really do whatever they want and the residents have little recourse.  That’s the worst case and I don’t hear about it happening often.  Most of us(estate owners) are good people and will go out of our way for our residents.  Just talk to us.  Now keep in mind, we still have to pay tier to the Lindens so we’ll be as accomodating as possible.

So, that’s the story with estate/island land.  Need clarification or more info then IM me in world or leave a comment here.  I’ll be happy to help.  Oh and I do have some land available on Angel Square to buy or rent if anyone is interested?  😉

With all the hoopla about open spaces and questions about who owns what, here is a little primer on owning land.

Mainland:  If you buy a parcel of land on what is known as mainland you pay the lindens a monthly tier fee above the actual purchase price you paid.  You don’t have any estate rights, there is no covenant(land rules), and your limited in how much you can terraform.  Now if you rent a parcel on mainland, there is no initial purchase price other than the first month of tier(generally) which is paid to someone other than the lindens and your rights are further limited.  I won’t go into all the details in this post of how this works, these are just the  basics.  One rule when dealing with buying land on mainland, you have to be a premium member.

Private estates/Islands:  You can buy land on private estates.  You pay a purchase price and get rights to the land you purchased.  Most islands have covenants though that set the tone and rules for the island.  Make sure you read this before you buy.  Some are vague and badly written, others well written and clear.  You will still pay a monthly tier fee to the owner of the estate/island.  You do not have to be a premium member.  Many islands also let you rent land where you pay a monthly fee, no upfront purchase price.  Again, you pay the estate owner.

There are many different types of estate owners.  Some ethical, some not so ethical.  Some easy to deal with, some absolute jerks.  If your going to buy land on an estate, ask around.  Get recommendations from your friends.  If someone has been living on the same estate for quite awhile, chances are they are happy with the tier fees and the estate owner.

I’ve owned Angel Square for about 9 months now and I’d like to think I’m a good landlord. 🙂  I have land up for rent or sale, IM me in world or leave me a note here if your interested.

If you  have questions about land ownership/renting/prim allowances/tier fees/etc.. give me a holler, I’ll do my best to help you.

I hope this helped a few of you. 🙂

Privacy

Ok this post has been mulling around in my head for awhile now.  Figured it was time to put the virtual pen to the virtual paper. 🙂

I recently moved off of BaileysReach back on to Angel Square.  Most of this decision was financial and i’ll be honest was a double edged sword.  Part of me really hated leaving but the other part couldn’t wait to get back to being close to everyone again. 🙂  I missed that sense of community I had when I lived on Angel Square before.  Being on BaileysReach was great, the privacy alone was wonderful but there is *too much of a good thing*.

So, the privacy standpoint.  At any time I could push the button and make The Reach private, denying public access.  I did that several times in fact.  But having 65,000sqm to yourself can get really lonely.  I had friends drop in of course but I didn’t spend enough time there really appreciating it.  The landscaping Rrish did was amazing but other than the occasional lounge about next to the waterfall I rarely used it.  In fact, I think Aribeth was there more than me. 🙂

So now I’m back living on Angel Square and I forgot how little privacy there really is.  I’ve forbidden ban lines on Angel Square so if someone wants to keep you off their land they need a security orb.  I have one, just haven’t put it up yet.

Even when I do put it up, everyone who lives on Angel Square will have access as well as all of my friends.  It’s really to keep out the noobs and the snoops.

The noobs don’t know any better.  They haven’t figured out that it’s rude to go poking around in other peoples houses.  The doors don’t lock so they figure it’s an open invitation to wander thru.  Here’s a hint, it’s not ok.  You wouldn’t do it in RL, don’t do it in SL.   They also don’t realize that they shouldn’t leave their toys around.  Now I know sometimes you crash and you can’t get back to where you were.  But really, rezzing a house is a bit different then a boat or scooter.  Just because there is a space that looks empty doesn’t mean you can simply take up residence.  You’ll get your stuff back, trust me.

Then there are the snoops.  The ones who feel the need to poke in everything, click everything and just be a nuisance INSIDE YOUR HOUSE, WHEN YOUR THERE.  If I don’t know you and you walk in my house and I ask you to leave, that’s a good hint to leave.  Don’t argue with me that it’s public land.  It’s not.  I own it.  It has a house on it.  More clues to someone *living* there!  Again, think RL courtesies.

I’m happy to be back on Angel Square and not off by myself anymore.  I will get the orb working soon though. 🙂

To my friends – I love you all, you are welcome to drop by anytime!

The lab by way of M Linden came out with their *revised* structure.  Prices are still going up but slower.  Limits will be placed on prims and scripts and a new level of land becomes available.

I’m not going to go thru all the back and forth on this one.  Is this the end of the debate and restructuring?  I hope not.  An organization has to restructure to stay alive so I hope that this becomes an active dialog between the lab and it’s customers/residents/clients whatever you want to call us.

Does this effect me?  Of course it does.  It will effect all of us.  The Crown and Pearl should be fine, although after January not sure how many fireworks you’ll see set off from there.  We’ll just have to set them off on Angel Square ;).

If the many residents currently renting on an openspace don’t want to pay the higher tier, they’ll have to move.  Which means that land sales on estates should go back up.  That will make me happy as I have two residential lots available right now.

So, the lab listened and made some changes.  Not exactly the changes we all wanted but they did something.   The lindens aren’t perfect folks.  They make mistakes and blunders right along with the rest of us.

The one thing I’ve learned is that the only way to affect change is too decide to do it.  If you want something bad enough you’ll work hard to get it.  Feel strongly about an issue, well take your argument to someone who can do something about it. Not with anger but with real solutions or suggestions.  Don’t just bitch and moan that you don’t like something, come up with a better alternative.

That’s it for me on this subject.  It is what it is.

See you all at the Crown!
